2020 Galaxidia Single Vineyard Shiraz

2020 Galaxidia Single Vineyard Shiraz
2020 Galaxidia Shiraz

Just 5 barrels produced.

The Galaxidia vineyard was planted in 1998 after purchasing a neighbouring property. The vineyard is a north facing slope and typically produces wines of fragrance and intensity. This small bottling of a 100 dozen is from the best block on this vineyard. The nose shows lifted red fruits and sweet exotic spice. The palate is plush and full bodied but shows restraint and freshness. Flavours of dark plum and mulberry are beautifully balanced by a savoury, earthy richness.

"Winning on the brilliant vineyard name alone, this is a throaty, highly floral full-bodied shiraz. While it has spent 18 months in oak (20% new), the oak is nestled nicely, serving as a signpost to sapid flavours of Cherry Ripe, anise, molten raspberry liqueur and peppery freshness. Sure there are oak-derived vanilla and cedar elements but they tone, corral and suppress the fruit in the best sense, adjoining the grape tannins in a union of tension. Liberation will come with time and patience. 94 points"
Ned Goodwin, Halliday Wine Companion

"Very attractive bouquet that harmonises cedar/cigarbox and leathery mellowing fruit aromas, a hint of crushed seashells, the palate full bodied and supple textured, mellowing and balanced with savoury underbrush, dried-herb and terracotta notes. It's savoury without being too drying. Forward maturity is in its favour for drinkability, but it will surely age well too. 92 points"

Vineyard Notes
The winter and spring of 2016 was one of the wettest on record which delayed flowering. By early summer we had some periods of good warm weather which encouraged growth, but vintage was still looking a month behind 2016 and more in line with an old-fashioned vintage. Several rainfall events in January further delayed vintage and had the vineyard team working hard. Thankfully the warm and dry weather returned, and the harvest proceeded at a leisurely and relaxed pace allowing a long ripening time for maximum flavour development. The wines look outstanding.
Winemaker Notes
The Galaxidia vineyard is always recognisable for its very aromatic red fruited perfume. It jumps out of the glass and seduces with a very alluring perfume.
Food Pairing Notes
The perfect accompaniment to scotch fillet chargrilled with roasted root vegetables and mustard.
